| | | | At the May meeting I mentioned that the board was developing challenge coins, as designed by our editor Kenny V. (AKA: HOGNGO), to be awarded for chapter Ride365 participation. These challenge coins have been designed to represent the Eastside, with artistic representations of a motorcycle riding on the 520 bridge and a volcanic mountain in the distance. They will be awarded for the previous calendar year after the completion of the HOG Ride365 audit, so typically between April and June each year. There are three coins, representing 1,000 miles, 5,000 miles, and 10,000 miles, which will be engraved with the year of participation. Each member achieving those mileage levels will be awarded one of the challenge coins. |
| | As always, if you have any questions about joining the group or anything H.O.G. related, feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]. I'm always here to lend a hand and make sure your ride with us is good as gold!

| | Summer riding weather is here!
Let’s get out there and enjoy it. One of the great perks of being a HOG member is that you are part of a group of folks that would like to get out and ride with you. If there is not a ride already on Facebook, go ahead and create one! Post the details on Facebook. Just be sure that everyone on the ride shows you a current membership card or fills out a waiver. Extra waivers are at the dealership, over in the HOG area.
If you do not have a membership card, or your membership card has expired, please contact William or LaNelle. |

Worth Repeating:
Our primary
goal as a Chapter is to "ride bikes and have fun." One
significant component in achieving this goal is encouraging members to conduct
group rides. We have large rides twice a month that are planned and led by our
Chapter Road Captains. We also have impromptu rides created by members
announcing their plans to ride so that others may join. One popular way of
doing this is to advertise the ride on the chapter's Facebook group page.
These
impromptu rides are considered official rides by HOG and are subject to the six
HOG guidelines for group rides.
1. All
participants must be current national HOG members, with a current release on
file with the chapter. 2. One guest is allowed per member. Guests must sign a
release. 3. Any guests under 18 years of age (minors) must have a release signed
by the minor's legal guardian. 4. The member who posts the ride is the organizer
and is responsible for verifying that all participants are members or that
participants have properly filled out and signed the appropriate release. These
releases need to be put into the Chapter mailbox at the dealership. 5. When the
ride has reached the destination, the organizer must clearly announce that the
ride is over. 6. Tips for conducting group rides are available on page 12 of the HOG
Chapter Handbook.
|
| |
To lower
the burden on ride organizers, we have created a membership card system for the
chapter. This card has the member's name, HOG number, and expiration date. This
date is either the date that the member's national HOG membership expires or
the last day of the year, whichever comes first. If a member's national
membership expires prior to the end of the calendar year, a new membership card
with an expiration date set to the end of the calendar year will be issued upon
renewal of the member's national membership.
The ABC simple
policy for these rides will be: A. Each participant provides a
membership card that shows they are current with their national membership and
release waiver. B. If a current membership card is not provided, the guest must
fill out a Chapter Event Release Form for Adults release. Minors must have a
Chapter Event Release Form for Minors signed by their legal guardian. C. No
exceptions. Cancel the ride if there are any issues.
If you have
any questions, please contact [email protected],
or any of your board members.

| | | Time and time again, it seems that I have been saved from suffering the worst of the possible consequences of my own mistakes. Maybe you’ve been through some situation where you get to the other side and think, “Wow. That could have been so much worse!”. I know I have. In fact, I’ve had that thought more times in my life than I can count. Circumstances that I got myself into that could have – maybe even should have turned out far worse than they did. Especially when I was younger. Bad decisions, carelessness.
Like, for example, when I was 19 and I got caught racing in Columbia Park (Kennewick) with my girlfriend in the car with me. The officer certainly could have hauled me off to jail. Instead, he told me “I don’t care if you wrap yourself around a telephone pole. But I do care what happens to her!”. He wrote me a ticket and I lost my license for a while. But technically, he could have arrested me and thrown away the key. He was right. I had endangered her life, driving like an idiot. At least I won the race .
Or the time in 1992 when I fell at work and broke my wrist. It’s a much longer story than I have time for here, but the bottom line is that I was supposed play drums for a Baptist Singles conference in New Mexico a few weeks later. Doc told me there was no way that was going to happen, saying that bone would take 8 weeks to heal up and proceeded to put me in a cast. A week later I went in for a recheck and a new cast after the swelling had gone down. The bone was completely healed (x-rays confirmed this), and I ended up playing at the conference in front of 3,000 single adults.
The reason I am sharing this with you is because I’ve had another such experience recently. As some of you know, on June 5th, I had an accident with my table saw. I had ripped a piece of flooring, shut off the saw, and flipped the board around to cut it to length. Not paying attention to where my hand was, I put it right into the spinning saw blade. I nearly cut off my thumb. And In fact, I thought I had. I also lacerated my index and middle fingers. My wife took charge, wrapped up my hand in a clean towel and ordered me into the car. Off to the ER, where I’d wait for 2 ½ hours in the waiting room – bleeding all over the place. 23 stitches later and an appointment with a hand surgeon, I went home with most of my thumb still intact. It will heal. My fear that I’d never play drums again has been put to rest. But wow – this really could have been so much worse. I’m certain that if I hadn’t turned the saw off, I’d have lost three fingers.
The following Sunday, I was in church. We were singing a song called “The Goodness Of God”. As we were singing, I saw in my mind’s eye the moment of the accident. I saw my hand go into the spinning blade. And I heard His still small voice say to me “This, and no further”. THIS AND NO FURTHER! He has allowed the thing to happen, but He stopped it from being any worse. It was akin to that moment in LOTR where Gandalf was in a battle with the Balrog and demanded “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!”. Because of His very words to me, I can honestly say that though I’m off the bike for a while and I can’t play drums until at least September, I am grateful for His protection. The bone was fractured and chipped, but not severed. We are talking about fractions of a fraction of an inch. To me, this was miraculous.
So many times, He has allowed some circumstance to come into my life, usually of my own doing, and He has protected me from the worst of the possible outcomes. He has declared “This, and no further”. In a very small sense, like He did with Job of the Old Testament. He allowed certain things to be taken from him – his wealth, his children, his health to some degree. But he did not allow Satan to take his life. And Job refused to curse God. “Though He slay me, yet will I praise Him.”
So, the next time you experience a situation where things really could have turned out far worse than they did – I would encourage you to remember that you have a Father in Heaven who time and again has spoken those very words throughout your life. THIS, AND NO FURTHER!
Kerry S. "Chaplain"
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…”

| | | | A FEW THOUGHTS on the "Angel Ride"
Step into a world of compassion and generosity by participating in the Angel Run, a fundraising ride that promises not just an exhilarating experience but also the chance to make a real difference. With 100% of the proceeds going towards a noble cause, this event, with its meticulously planned route and inclusive atmosphere, welcomes riders of all kinds to come together for a purpose greater than themselves.
As a veteran chaplain with decades of experience in supporting hospice care, I can attest to the profound impact of this event. From designing the event graphics to witnessing its growth year after year, the Angel Run is a testament to the power of community coming together in times of need. So, gear up, join the ride, and be a part of something truly meaningful.

| | | | Don’t Judge A Book By The Cover
It’s been an accepted saying for as long as we can remember “Don’t judge a book by the cover” yet, it seems we regularly do just that on many fronts in the real world. The biker world is made of all shapes and sizes, but, for us baby boomers it was growing up in a world where bikers were cast in somewhat of a cloud of nefarious activities and someone to avoid bumping into.
It's been twenty years now since I picked up Bonne and we took a ride on my 04 fat boy down to the Ballard locks to walk around and enjoy lunch. As we walked hand in hand with our jackets and chaps on, a little family approached on the path in the opposite direction. In passing we overheard the lady say to her little one “Stay away from them, they are bikers”.
It’s funny to think about now, and yet we still find ourselves in a era where judging others seem to have entered a whole new world of coming to conclusions without reading the book, or at least hearing the other side of the story. Every person’s case seems just until you hear the other side, like walking a mile in someone else’s shoes.
Perhaps that little lady would have had a different conclusion if she had known that I was working for the fire department, and Bonne was running her own business with 500 employees? |
