Most of us were paying tribute to the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom this past Memorial Day. Let's uphold their legacy by standing for truth, justice, and the American way, and what better way to embrace that spirit than by hitting the open road on a powerful Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Let's ride on this year in their honor and keep the flame of freedom burning bright.

On May 19, three of our chapter members participated as ride leaders in the inaugural Distinguished Gentelman’s Ride (DGR) for Everett. The DGR is a charity ride event, with rides organised in many cities to occur on the same day, to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health. It was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa and inspired by a photo of TV Show Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic motorcycle, wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way of connecting niche motorcycle enthusiasts and communities while raising funds to support the men in our lives.

As always, if you have any questions about joining the group or anything H.O.G. related, feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]. I'm always here to lend a hand and make sure your ride with us is good as gold!

As discussed at the May chapter meeting, the board is working on some chapter challenge coins for Ride 365 mileage. These coins will be awarded for 2023 when they become available.

The Seamstress (Kimberly) did not plan on attending the May meeting, but she will be at our June meeting.

June

10 Years Ago and the single deadliest landslide in United States history.

The mud and debris from the adjacent mountainside destroyed 49 homes and ended the lives of 43 people. Community members immediately responded, bringing excavation equipment and shovels to help with the search and rescue effort. At times they were digging with their hands. Those who came were there to help, to find survivors, and later to recover friends and loved ones. As the response extended, those involved became determined to bring as much comfort to those who lost family and they did not stop searching until July 22, when the last of the 43 victims was recovered.

Take a photo of yourself, your Harley, and the Oso Slide Memorial Sign at the intersection of State Route 530 and Steelhead Drive. While there, have a walk around the memorial site.

This ride – like most – is all you make of it. Here’s a simple “slabbing’ it” Google Map route for a short jaunt to the Slide Memorial

As a suggestion, take the long way there (and back). Hit some of the great little towns like Granite Falls, Darrington (The Burger Barn or Red Top Tavern are both good), Concrete, Sedro-Woolley, etc. Incorporate a little Chuckanut in your return home. A little Chuckanut is always good for the soul! Here’s the extended version of a GREAT RIDE: https://maps.app.goo.gl/BLdHQg6S3cDbvm4r7

ESHOG Brothers and Sisters,

I’m really excited that the weather is starting to get decent but I’m sorry to say that you won’t be seeing much of me for the next month or so. By time you read this, I will have (finally) had my knee surgery. This is what I’ll be doing for most of the next month or so. I’ll try to make it to the meeting in June but I most likely won’t be riding until sometime in August or so but I’ll be with you in spirit!

Joining the monthly "D" event not only fuels your passion for motorcycle riding but also supports the chapter's 365 mileage program. By participating, you not only get to enjoy thrilling rides but also contribute to the community and help reach collective milestones. So, gear up, join the "D" event, and let's ride towards a brighter future together!

We regret to inform you that our June Sunday Social Event will be canceled this year due to a clash with Father's Day. We understand if this may cause disappointment, but we encourage you to spend the day celebrating with your own father. Our team is looking forward to hosting more exciting events in the future, and we appreciate your understanding and support. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to mail me a letter with a return envelope, address and stamp.

They will be available for collection at the upcoming June meeting. In case of urgent need, remember to prioritize your health and call 911 first, and then feel free to reach out to me. Worth Repeating:

Our primary goal as a Chapter is to "ride bikes and have fun."  One significant component in achieving this goal is encouraging members to conduct group rides. We have large rides twice a month that are planned and led by our Chapter Road Captains. We also have impromptu rides created by members announcing their plans to ride so that others may join. One popular way of doing this is to advertise the ride on the chapter's Facebook group page.

These impromptu rides are considered official rides by HOG and are subject to the six HOG guidelines for group rides.

1. All participants must be current national HOG members, with a current release on file with the chapter. 2. One guest is allowed per member. Guests must sign a release. 3. Any guests under 18 years of age (minors) must have a release signed by the minor's legal guardian. 4. The member who posts the ride is the organizer and is responsible for verifying that all participants are members or that participants have properly filled out and signed the appropriate release. These releases need to be put into the Chapter mailbox at the dealership. 5. When the ride has reached the destination, the organizer must clearly announce that the ride is over. 6. Tips for conducting group rides are available on page 12 of the HOG Chapter Handbook.

To lower the burden on ride organizers, we have created a membership card system for the chapter. This card has the member's name, HOG number, and expiration date. This date is either the date that the member's national HOG membership expires or the last day of the year, whichever comes first. If a member's national membership expires prior to the end of the calendar year, a new membership card with an expiration date set to the end of the calendar year will be issued upon renewal of the member's national membership.

The ABC simple policy for these rides will be:
A. Each participant provides a membership card that shows they are current with their national membership and release waiver.
B. If a current membership card is not provided, the guest must fill out a Chapter Event Release Form for Adults release. Minors must have a Chapter Event Release Form for Minors signed by their legal guardian.
C. No exceptions.  Cancel the ride if there are any issues.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected], or any of your board members.

June is here!

And those April showers and crazy windy days did bring us some beautiful weather last few weeks. We've already had some great rides and it's wonderful to see so many of you getting after those monthly destinations and the 2024 5 D's and 3 L's. Way to go!

Gradually we are getting there – to date we have 100 members that have renewed out of 143 that were current in 2023.

Just another reminder, that each year, we do need a new updated Chapter Membership Enrollment Form and Release signed. No money involved, but it is a requirement for each HOG Chapter to have an up-to-date current membership form on file. You do need to be current with National HOG to join/stay current with the chapter.

So thank you thank you to those who have sent in or dropped off their forms.

If you have not done so yet, you can find the form at eshog.com/join the chapter. Please print out, fill out and sign (we must have signed original on file) and drop it in the mail, address below, OR drop the form at the dealership in our drop box on the East wall of our membership corner, next to the bulletin board.

Better yet, bring it with you to the next chapter meeting at the dealership. We want to see you!

If you notice In the HogScan app or in your profile/My Account on eshog.com, points are listed.   Each time you are 'checked into' a ride, or event, you accumulate points:

  • 10 points (Chapter Meeting, Rides, Monthly Sunday Suppers)
  • 15 points (Volunteer Opportunities)
  • 25 points (Annual 'Pignic' and designated Dealership Events)

As we add various events and multi day rides to the calendar, we will assign a point value to each event.

You must RSVP to each event you plan to attend and when you are 'checked in" – the system will add the points to your total.

Each Chapter Meeting/HOG Call the top 5-point earners will be announced.

At the end of the year, we will award the following to the highest 3-point earners:

  • $100 gift card to the member with the highest point total.
  • $50 gift card to the member with the second highest total.
  • $25 gift card to the member with the third highest total.

The more you participate, the more points you can earn for the grand prize!

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Remember to keep up to date on your membership with the chapter, and only active members will be allowed on the ESHOG FB page.

By the time this newsletter is published I’ll be back home. But today as I write this brief article, I can hardly contain my excitement for the next few days as a group of us embark on a four-day Memorial Day Ride. The sign you see in the photo at the top of this article is the pinnacle of the trip. Lolo Pass. Many of you are quite familiar with this stretch of wonder.

For those who haven’t made their way to Lolo Pass, let me briefly explain. A stunning 99 miles of twisties that run highway 12 along the Lochsa River, Lolo Pass was traversed by the Lewis and Clark expedition in September of 1805. For me, it’s one of the most exciting rides in the Pacific Northwest. Starting in Kooskia Idaho and eventually landing in Missoula Montana, Lolo has some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ridden through. If you haven’t taken the opportunity to take this ride – I would encourage you to put it on your ride calendar. You won’t be disappointed in the “Long and Winding Road”. For those who have taken this ride – you know exactly what I am talking about!

Experiences like taking a ride like this never fail to remind me of the goodness of God – no matter what is going on around me. It is good to get away from all that preoccupies us and just enjoy what He has created for us.

“In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.” Psalm 95:4,5 (NIV)

To borrow from the great philosophers John Lennon and Paul McCartney penned 54 years ago, the splendor of His creation always leads me to His door. The long and winding road -That leads to your door -Will never disappear- I've seen that road before -It always leads me here- Lead me to your door - John Lennon / Paul McCartney - 1970

See you all soon!

A FEW THOUGHTS

As the weather starts to change in the Northwest, we can't help but feel grateful for the raingear we invested in. However, for those of us who haven't had the chance to venture beyond the cascades range, we rely on the photos and posts from our fellow chapter members to remind us of the beauty that surrounds us. It's not just about the ride, but also about the stunning landscapes that we get to experience. We appreciate the community that we've built, and the way that we can share our love for the open road and the great outdoors.

Several years ago, I had a chance reconnection with an old acquaintance from Billings, Montana, which was a veteran mainstream news reporter I knew in my 20’s. In his late 70s at the time, Bob had just re-married a younger rancher lady who loved riding motorcycles. And when he purchased his first new Harley-Davidson, he knew he had to make the pilgrimage to the Sturgis Rally, and wanted to know if I would be heading there.

Image

Despite his age, Bob fearlessly took on the challenge and rode his Harley to the rally, proving that age is just a number when it comes to adventure and passion. To this day I am thankful for helping him make that ride, as due to health and age restrictions he did not ride for too many years. I will say it was amazing that neither of us were beaten in a pulp by angry bikers who were either getting cut off or squeezed out of their riding lane by a new rider.

Amazing how time goes by on those multiple day rides full of adventure, especially after you’ve been on the road for several days of getting into the mode. Likewise, so do the years begin to blur the lines when you have been riding for over 50 years.

As the chapter's editor, I find immense joy in staying connected to the thrilling adventures my friends are currently embarking on, even though I may no longer be as actively participating in rides like before. This role not only keeps me in the loop but also allows me to contribute to the community in a meaningful way, ensuring that the spirit of adventure remains alive and thriving among us.

Thanks for reading to the end of your editor’s many rambling words!
