Keep on logging those HOG miles! There's still a few of you yet to claim your Eastside HOG mileage challenge coins for 2023, so grab me after the next meeting if you didn't get yours.

I'd like to welcome our newest board member, Ian Polhemus, to the role of Safety Officer. Thank you, Ian, and I know you'll have some great safety tips for all of us. Next year there will be two vacancies on the board, so please think about nominating someone (or yourself) for one of these positions for 2025: Activities Coordinator and Treasurer (from June 2025)

It would be great to get your nominations into me before the November meeting as that's when we will be voting on the board positions.

As always, if you have any questions about joining the group or anything HOG related, feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]. I'm always here to lend a hand and make sure your ride with us is good as gold!

Your October 2024 Destination:

Jake's Cafe on 2nd Street in Snohomish. You can easily get there from Eastside by taking 520E to 405N to Hwy 9.

... But, why would you do that? Get over to Redmond Ridge, drop down into the Snoqualmie Valley and take W Snoqualmie Valley Rd out to Hwy 9. It's a great twisty/curvy road. DO BE MINDFUL of the Fall leaves now beginning to accumulate on the road.

While in beautiful downtown Snohomish, have a walk about. There's plenty to see and do there. You may even get the nostalgia of walking through your small hometown as a kid - as applicable. Plan on a wait if you decide to have breakfast at Jake's. They don't take reservations and are VERY popular. It will be worth your wait!

Take a photo of yourself, your moto, and the Jake's sign out front. Then, post it on our ES HOG Facebook page and/or send it to me, [email protected] for your chance at the raffle for a $40 HD gift card. You must accomplish this by the evening of 25 October.

Ride Easy, Safe & Often!

*Effective 26 October, all Mid-Month and End of Month Chapter rides will begin at 11:00AM. This timing is no longer season-dependent and may be changed at the discretion of the Ride Leader that day.  Should the ride start earlier than 11:00AM, the Ride Leader will make this announcement on Facebook and on the ESHOG Calendar - with ample lead time. Of course, you'll want to be fueled up and bladder emptied for the Pre-Ride Safety Brief at 10:45AM.

Fall is here!

The riding days are getting shorter, and colder. Be careful out there! We have 48 members currently participating in Ride 365. 24 members have still not done a second mileage reading, and are showing zero miles for the year! Get those second mileage readings in! Print out the form below, and get it to the dealership! Drop if off with Jon in sales, or put it in the box on the wall in the HOG area at Eastside.

If you are still at zero, you should see an email from me. If you have moved out of the area, we have a program in place for you to turn in your miles over email.
Forms (Click Here) are on line, or at the dealership!

ESHOG Christmas Party - Dec 14

NEW SAFETY OFFICER

I'm honored to have been announced as the new Safety Officer for ESHOG, following in the footsteps of Dave H., who has stepped down to pursue new professional opportunities that require him to relocate. I know I have big shoes to fill, and I’m grateful for the support of Tony, and the ESHOG board, and membership.

Thank you, Dave, for all your efforts and wishing you the best of luck in your new endeavors!

As I settle into this new role, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to those who I haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting. I attended a military high school, served four years of active duty in the Army, including Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and then spent nearly 30 years with the Seattle Police Department, retiring in 2021. For the last 14 years of my career, I worked as a detective on the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, investigating cases of child exploitation.

Since retiring, I’ve transitioned to the private sector, working for OpenText in digital forensics sales, which allows me the flexibility to ride more often...usually. I’m also a proud father of two: my son Adam, who’s serving as an Electronic Warfare Specialist in the Army, and my daughter, who just started her journey at UC Davis with the goal of becoming a veterinary surgeon. My wife, Amy, keeps me in line on most days and is quite accommodating to my need to be on 2 wheels!

Lastly, a big thank you to Jason G. "Griff" for bestowing me with the road name "Sheepdog." For those unfamiliar, in law enforcement, sheep represent the public, wolves represent those who would do harm, and sheepdogs are those who protect the flock from the wolves. It's a meaningful role I carry with pride, both in life and now as your Safety Officer.

I look forward to serving you all and will be sharing more on safety in the coming months.

Every ride is an adventure — make it a safe one!

Most of you most likely know who Black Sheep is and what we are about. But I thought that this month, I would give a little bit of an introduction as to who we are, for the sake of our newer members and those who might just be wondering why we keep showing up.

Black Sheep Harley Davidsons for Christ (BSHDFC) is an international Motorcycle Ministry (M/M) that is focused on serving our H.O.G. brothers and sisters. We are not here to knock you over the head with the Bible. We are not here to tell you how messed up you are (you probably already know that). And we are certainly not here to stand in judgment of you. Not our job. Jesus said that judgment wasn’t His job. If it wasn’t His job, it certainly isn’t mine. We are here for one simple reason. We are here to serve you - in any way that we can.

I believe that I have shared our story with you before, but if you haven’t heard how we came into being back in 1999, it’s all on our website at www.blacksheephdfc.org . You will discover that we have 47 Chapters in 50 states, along with chapters in Mexico, Australia, and France.

The first thing to know about us is that, like you, we love to ride (and eat)! For most of us didn’t buy a Harley so we could join Black Sheep. We joined Black Sheep because we already had a Harley and wanted to find a way to use it to walk out our Christian faith. We are sold out followers of Jesus Christ – and I certainly hope that is abundantly clear as you get to know us.

We truly have a calling to serve the motorcycle community. In terms of service, we set up boot shine booths and bike blessing booths at motorcycle events. We visit the sick and injured when we can. We lend an ear to listen when someone just needs a sounding board. We flip burgers and dogs and whatever else is needed at events and gatherings. When needed, we will step aside and pray for you, whenever a need arises. Some of us perform memorial services and weddings (some of you have no church home so we want to serve you in that way wherever possible). We just “do life” with you. We are not the only motorcycle ministry. Not by a long stretch. In fact, we aren’t the only M/M in this HOG chapter. Roger M. (along with his wife Kathy) is a regional leader on Christian Motorcycle Association. He’s here for the same reason we are. To serve this chapter. So, if you don’t like me, go see Roger. He’s an amazing Man of God.

As you will find on our website:

Our Ministry is Focused on Our 2 Million H.O.G. Members.

With so many similar clubs and ministries doing such a good job, it was our specific burden to focus our ministry on Harley Owners Group members. We are a breed unto ourselves, who often keep to ourselves, allowing only other H.O.G. members to speak into our lives. Such a focus should not be viewed as exclusive (for all are welcome to Christ’s love) but rather strategic. Though we often find ourselves ministering to other riders, it is HOG members to whom we give about 50% of our time and resources. Black Sheep is not only HOG-focused but family-oriented. We are pleased to ride as single adults, married couples and often with our children. Whole families attend our events and rides.”

As I stated before, that does not mean that we stand in judgment of you, nor are we trying to get you to come under some religious law. In fact, the people Jesus had the most trouble with were the Pharisees – the religious leaders of his day.

One quick example from Matthew 12: God rested on the 7th day of Creation, and told His people, Israel, to observe the “Sabbath”, and to rest from their labors as He did. By the time Jesus came into the picture, the Pharisees had overstated and abused that “law” to the point that they weren’t even allowed to pick a grain of wheat or help a neighbor in need. So, when Jesus healed a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath, the Pharisees freaked out wanting to arrest and punish Him. Jesus reminded them that God loves Mercy over sacrifice. He came to serve, not to be served.

That is what we are here for. Please feel free to pull any of us aside if you have any questions or need anything from us at all.

After 20 years of being a HOG officer I have come to understand a few of the many sayings floating around about HOG chapters. One of the most prolific is “leading a chapter is like herding cats”, perhaps because of the independent nature of those who enjoy the sweeping curves on a beautiful afternoon. Being the editor for a chapter you are simply there to communicate to the rest of the chapter what is coming down the pipeline from the dealership and chapter officers. I have come up with a new term to describe this event which ends with the issue of the Hog Call that you are presently reading. The process of crafting the graphics and content goes back thousands of years and the term used at the time was “making bricks without straw”.

The face of all chapters are made up of volunteers that seems to be constantly changing as life happens. People move, stop riding, get a stick stuck up their a#@% or just get too old and feeble to get the kickstand down.

Like our new safety officer, I’ve enjoyed the careers in my own life where helping others was the central focus of our existence. For me it was being an ordained minister and traveling around the globe, the other kept me home, being a full-time fire department employee where I also ran the chaplain program for thirty-five years. So, what your story becomes is up to you, if you enjoy riding your Harley-Davidson, and being part of the HOG network, get involved with your chapter.
